In carrying out parts of its mandate, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has withdrawn 7,210 non-compliant products from circulation in the markets after inspecting 6,233 facilities across Nigeria between May and July 2026.
The figures indicate that about 2,400 products were withdrawn from circulation every month during the three-month period.
The latest figures come amid persistent concerns about the safety of food, medicines and other regulated products sold across Nigerian markets.
NAFDAC, which made this known in a statement on Monday, September 7, said its Post-Market Surveillance Directorate conducted inspections across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in the three months.
The agency explained that about 80 percent of the surveillance activities during the period focused on detecting fake, falsified, substandard, and other non-compliant products.
The statement further said that food and water products accounted for the highest number of items withdrawn from circulation, with 3,633 products affected.
It added that drugs and herbal products followed with 2,459, while 911 cosmetics, 183 medical devices, 21 chemicals and three vaccines and biological products were also withdrawn.
NAFDAC said its post-market surveillance activities involved intelligence gathering, laboratory analysis, enforcement operations and engagement with stakeholders.
