With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections entering the final 100-day stretch, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will on Tuesday brief political parties, security agencies, civil society groups and other stakeholders on its level of preparedness for the polls.
The commission will hold a World Press Conference and National Stakeholders’ Meeting at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, where INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, is expected to provide updates on the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and measures to protect the integrity of the elections.
The event comes as INEC moves towards the first set of the 2027 elections scheduled for 16 January, when Nigerians will vote in the presidential and National Assembly elections. Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for 6 February 2027.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC chairman, Adedayo Oketola, the commission said the meeting would provide Nigerians and key actors in the electoral process with an update on preparations as the polls approach.
“The Commission will provide updates on preparations for the elections, including the voters’ register, candidate nominations, logistics and critical measures to ensure the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement said.
The commission said the meeting was also intended to deepen engagement with institutions and groups whose activities are central to the conduct and security of the elections.
“The national stakeholders’ meeting underlines the Commission’s commitment to absolute transparency, proactive public communication, and collaborative engagement with key actors in the electoral ecosystem,” it said.
Those expected at the meeting include political party leaders, security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, members of the diplomatic corps, development partners, civil society organisations and election observer groups.
Disability rights advocates, religious and traditional leaders, youth organisations and media executives are also expected to attend.
The Tuesday engagement will come at a critical point in INEC’s preparations, particularly as the commission works to finalise the administrative and logistical arrangements required for the elections.
The integrity of the voters’ register is also expected to remain a major issue. INEC has previously identified duplicate registrations, registration by non-citizens, deceased voters and incomplete or inaccurate records as challenges requiring attention. The commission had announced plans for a nationwide voter revalidation exercise to clean up and strengthen the register ahead of the 2027 elections.
The electoral body has also been navigating changes to the legal framework for the 2027 polls, with electoral amendments under consideration by the National Assembly. INEC had earlier called for timely action on the proposed amendments, stressing the importance of a stable legal environment ahead of the elections.
The commission has not said that it will announce any alteration to the existing electoral timetable at Tuesday’s meeting. Instead, the focus, according to the statement, will be on its readiness and engagement with stakeholders.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with guests expected to be seated by that time.
INEC said the proceedings would be broadcast live on major national television networks and streamed on its official social media platforms, giving Nigerians outside the venue access to the briefing.
Attendance at the conference venue will be strictly by invitation. Accredited journalists and invited guests will be required to present their invitation cards or accreditation badges at security checkpoints.
