The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centre in Ottawa, Canada, from 2027.
The proposed centre will enable Nigerians living in Canada and other parts of North America to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely to take the examination.
JAMB disclosed this in a statement on its official social media platforms following a visit by its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, to the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
The board said the initiative was part of its efforts towards expanding access to Nigerian tertiary education for citizens living abroad.
“The proposed centre will make it easier for Nigerians in the diaspora to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” JAMB said.
The board said the initiative was part of its broader effort towards “taking Nigerian tertiary education to the world”.
It said the proposed centre would also “strengthen the connection between Nigerians abroad and the Nigerian education system”.
According to JAMB, the initiative would create “greater opportunities to showcase Nigerian tertiary education internationally”.
“For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” the board said.
JAMB said it was “working towards establishing a UTME examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, expected to commence operations in 2027.”
The board said the centre would serve eligible Nigerians in Canada and across North America, particularly those seeking admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions.
It described the planned centre as “a bigger opportunity to strengthen the connection between Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerian tertiary education”.
JAMB added that the initiative would provide “more access” and reduce barriers faced by Nigerians abroad who wish to pursue tertiary education in Nigeria.
The proposed Ottawa centre is expected to complement JAMB’s existing international examination arrangements and make it easier for prospective candidates outside Nigeria to participate in the admission process.
