Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has donated 15 Toyota Hilux vehicles and 300 motorcycles to traditional institutions aimed at strengthening security operations in the state.
The governor made the presentation on Thursday during a meeting of the the Federal and States Security Administrators held at the banquet hall, Government House, Yola.
Represented by his Deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, Fintiri expressed concern over persistent security threats posed by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the sub-region.
“The threats posed by Boko Haram and ISWAP in the sub-region remain persistent, dynamic, and ideological. While our gallant armed forces have significantly degraded their conventional capabilities, these insurgents continue to exploit vast rural terrains, asymmetric tactics, and cross-border vulnerabilities to strike at soft targets,” Fintiri said.
The governor also warned that attacks on electricity infrastructure, telecommunications towers and transport links could disrupt economic activities and worsen insecurity in affected communities.
He commended the military for its efforts in degrading insurgent groups but noted that the terrorists continued to exploit vast rural areas, asymmetric tactics and cross-border vulnerabilities to attack vulnerable communities.
“We must confront emerging threats that threaten our socio-economic fabric. Security is not merely about physical weaponry; it is about grassroots presence, social justice and inclusive governance,” he said.
The governor also warned that attacks on electricity infrastructure, telecommunications towers and transport links could disrupt economic activities and worsen insecurity in affected communities.
He called for actionable grassroots intelligence through newly established traditional councils, noting that traditional rulers were strategically positioned to identify suspicious movements and resolve local disputes before they escalated into violence.
Fintiri stressed the need to strengthen traditional institutions and expand local administration to bring government closer to the people.
“Security is not merely about physical weaponry; it is about grassroots presence, social justice, and inclusive governance. It was this conviction that drove our historic decision to create seven new Emirates and Chiefdoms across Adamawa State.
“By restoring dignity to local traditional institutions and expanding local administration, we deliberately brought government closer to the common man,” he added.
On the welfare of security personnel, the deputy governor appealed to the Federal Government to increase funding for security agencies, including the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Services and Customs.
“Our frontline officers—the police, the military, the Civil Defence, the DSS and Customs—are doing heroic work under difficult conditions.
“However, their operational funding, tactical equipment and welfare packages must be significantly upgraded by the Federal Government,” he said.
He called for stronger collaboration among security agencies to eliminate inter-agency rivalry and operational gaps that could undermine intelligence sharing and coordinated military operations.
“The security of Adamawa State is the security of Nigeria. We urgently require federal intervention to modernize our international borders. We need the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, drone coverage, joint border patrols, and the expedited establishment of One-Stop Border Posts to control illegal trans-border migration, arms proliferation, and smuggling,” he stated.
In his remark, the Special Assistant to the National Security Adviser on Governance and Subnational Affairs, Akoro Agishara, commended the Adamawa State Government for its support to security agencies.
On his part, the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Abubakar Isa Ahmadu, who received the vehicles on behalf of his colleagues, described the support as efforts to improve security across the state.
He then thanked the state government for the gesture.
