President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday met with the embattling President of the African Development Bank, Mr. Akinwumi Adesina behind closed-door in the State House, Abuja.

This was made public by the Personal Assistance to the President on New Media, Bashir Ahmad, in a series of tweet.

Ahnmad tweeted, attaching pictures of the meeting “President @MBuhari receives President of African Development Bank (AfDB), Dr. @Akin_Adesina this afternoon, at the State House, Abuja.”

Whistleblowers had petitioned Adesina, alleging that he had breached 16 rules of the bank’s code of conduct. Some of these included impediments of efficiency, involvement in political activities, private gains, and preferential treatment. However, Adesina had continued to deny the allegation.

Also, the committee of the board of directors of the bank, who are also serving as the ethic committee, found the allegations as being frivolous, unsubstantial and lacking in merit.

The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the board exonerated Adesina of all the 16 allegations following his satisfaction that the committee had done a thorough job, following all the rule and procedures of the of the bank in handling such cases.

However. The United State, through its Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, in a letter to the Chairperson of the Bank, Niale Koba, rejected the verdict of the committee and called for an independent investigation into the allegations against Adesina.

West African Pilots News reported that Leaders in Nigeria and African including former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo have faulted the US’ call for independent investigation, arguing that it is against the laid down rules.

Presently, Adesina, a Nigerian, is the sole candidate for the bank’s election that is scheduled to hold in August this year.
