In Enugu, 21 new cases have been laboratory confirmed bringing the total of confirmed cases in the state to 1355; while number of cases discharged stands at 1313, 21 persons lost their lives to the infection and 21 currently on admission.
The Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Emmanuel Obi revealed this on Friday while calling on residents to adhere to the protocols to stop the virus from spreading further.
“Covid-19 is still with us, please do not be deceived,” Obi warned.
“People are still advised to continue to protect themselves against COVID-19 by avoiding large gatherings, not embarking on non-essential travels; covering their mouths and noses when coughing and sneezing; wearing face masks especially when in public places and washing their hands regularly with soap under running water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers when running water and soap are not readily available,” the commissioner advised.
In Nigeria, as at 11th of December 2020, 796 new confirmed cases were recorded bringing confirmed cases in the nation to 72140; 65,712 cases have been discharged and 1,190 deaths recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
This is a huge concern as the nation may be on the verge of a possible second wave of covid-19 infections.
Osagie Ehanire, Minister of Health in a weekly briefing by Nigeria’s covid-19 task force, said the rise in cases was mostly driven by an increase in infections within communities and, to a lesser extent, by travelers entering Nigeria.
It is therefore pertinent that we take responsibility by adhering strictly to the protocols for prevention as the vaccines are expected in the country by April next year.
According to Premium Times, Faisal Shuaib, executive director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, said that Nigeria plans to access the vaccine through the COVAX initiative backed by the World Health Organization.
Ehanire further revealed that Nigeria hoped to start with at least 20 million doses from the COVAX facility. This will first cover health care workers and vulnerable people who are most at risk if infected, such as the elderly.
