A Chief Magistrate Court Yola presided by Aliyu Bawuro has remanded five staff of Lelewal motel over alleged stealing of hotel’s properties estimated at N410,000 only.
Some of the items which they were accused of stealing include; 5 bedroom carpets, 5 bedsheets, 15 pillowcases, 16 cotton linings all valued at N410,000, contrary to sections 60 and 276 of the state penal code law.
Those arraigned include Hanatu Hakinga, (25), Harrison Yohanna (40), Kanisin Edwin (40), Haruna Maze (37), Nicholas Lawrence, and Abigail Yerima at large.
While 4 of the defendants denied committing the offence, the 1st defendant, Harrison Yohanna, pleaded guilty and said that “it is good to tell the truth.”
Harrison informed the court that the 2nd defendant, Kanisin Edwin, gave him 4 carpets and blankets and asked him to sell it for them, explaining that he sold them at the sum of N30, 000 and was given N7000 as his share.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sergeant Nicholas Sawe, told the court that the matter is still under investigation and prayed the court to adjourn the matter to enable them assemble their witnesses to prove their case.
On his part, Counsel to the 2nd defendant, E. N. urged the court to grant bail to his client on most liberal terms, assuring that his client will not jump bail and that he will appear in court until the determination of the case.
Ruling on the matter, Magistrate Aliyu Bawuro, refused the bail application of the 2nd defendant, and ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody.
The case hearing was adjourned to 15th March 2021.
