ADDIS ABABA — Djibouti’s incumbent President Ismail Omar Guelleh has been re-elected, according to the provisional results released on Saturday.
The country’s Interior Minister Moumin Ahmed Cheick told local media that the provisional results showed Guelleh to have won over 98 per cent of the vote.
Voters on Friday went to the polls, which lasted until 7:00 p.m. local time as counting proceeded soon after.
Confirmed results would be released by the Constitutional Council several days later.
Djibouti, a country located in the Horn of Africa, serves as a major hub for international commerce as well as a key partner in the fight against sea piracy and transnational terrorism.
