The Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, formerly Consumer Protection Council has shut down Panda supermarket in the Jabi area of Abuja.
According to a post on FCCPC’s twitter handle, the commission said it shut down the supermarket based on what it called credible reports that there are imported sea foods, many of which had expired stored in the market.
“FCCPC inspected Panda supermarket Jabi based on credible reports that it discriminated andhad a concealed area for Asians nationals. Allegation confirmed, seafood and animals imported illegally from China discovered. Store closed in abundance of caution considering Coronavirus. Products with expired and irregular shelf life were also discovered at Panda Supermarket yesterday. Regulatory activities to remove all offensive products the Supermarket continues,” FCCPC posted on its twitter handle.
Coronavirus, a respiratory illness similar to the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS was found earlier in the year in a market in the Wuhan Province of China. So far it has claimed about 132 lives and spreading rapidly around the world.
