YOLA — Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Adamawa state has received about 30 case diaries of Sexual Gender-Based Violence between November and December 2021 from the Police.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri revealed this on Monday when a high-powered delegation led by the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Dame Pauline Tallen paid him a visit at Government House, Yola.
He stated that government would ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice, pointed out that Adamawa will soon join other states in the country in passing the Child Right Act into law.
Fintiri assured the delegation that their plea will be a reality as his administration will work with state legislators towards passing the act to reduce cases of child abuse in the state.
My administration has always demonstrated zero tolerance to all forms of Gender-Based Violence, as the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP) has been signed into law.
“I thanked the global partners for the establishment of sexual referral centers in Yola and Numan which provide avenues for survivors of sexual and gender-based to receive appropriate support and care,” he said.
The Governor further said that the office of the Attorney General of the state with Support from the European Union EU is set to launch the Adamawa state sexual Offenders Database.
Governor Fintiri revealed that Adamawa is among the five states implementing the European Union-United Nations joint initiative that achieved tremendous milestones in the past two years.
Earlier in her remarks, the Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Dame Pauline Tallen saluted Governor Fintiri for the stringent measures put in place towards eliminating violence against women and children.
Tallen who decried that Adamawa is among the six states that are yet to pass the child rights act into law, however, commended Governor Fintiri for signing into law the Violence Against Persons Provision Act (VAPP).
The delegation later proceeded to Modibbo Adama University, MAU Yola where they inspected the newly established Forensic Laboratory.
The laboratory is the first of its kind in West Africa was commissioned by Ulla Mueller, United Nations Population Fund, and Nigeria Country Representative on the 15th December, 2020.
Among the delegation is Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Prince Clem Agba, and Resident Coordinator UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mr. Mathias Solmak.
