…cautions them against meddling in local politics

Brig-Gen Yushau Dogara Ahmed, the Director General (DG) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reaffirmed the assurance of the safety of corps members during the 2023 general elections as assured by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The DG equally advised corps members to be good ambassadors of the NYSC by resisting overtures to compromise their neutrality and to work hard to give credibility to the entire electoral process by performing all assignments given to them with utmost sense of responsibility.

Yushau disclosed this at the closing ceremony of the, 2023 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 orientation course which took place at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Paikoro, Niger State, and advised corps members and their employers not to sabotage the purpose for the establishment of the NYSC.

He said, “I urge you to accept wherever you are posted to for primary assignment, we are calling on corps employers to always accept corps members posted to them and make necessary provisions for their welfare as they perform the mandatory national service”.

The NYSC DG, however, cautioned corps members serving at different units and departments to desist from meddling in local politics in their places of primary assignment but to remain neutral while serving as ad hoc staff before, during, and after the elections.

He added, “We have been discussing with the INEC and security agencies, and they have assured us that the security and welfare of corps members who would be part of the entire electoral process before, during, and after the elections are well taken care of to make things easy for them.

“It will interest the corps members to know that the performance of their predecessors contributed largely towards the credibility of previous elections and that earned NYSC accolades from both local and foreign observers”.

“I enjoin you to take a clue from your predecessors by performing the election duties with a high sense of responsibility. You are to ensure adherence to the guidelines as contained in the electoral act and above all, remain neutral throughout the exercise,” he said.

He said, “I urge you to avoid using social media for ethnic jingoism, rumour peddling, and promotion of hatred. Instead, your activities online should be targeted at self-improvement and promoting unity, peace, and development of Nigeria”.

Earlier, Niger State NYSC coordinator, Mr. Mahmud Hassan Taura said that there are 1,090 corps members in the orientation camp who have been posted or deployed to the 25 Local Government Areas of the state to contribute their quota towards Nigeria’s development.
