The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), Borno State Command, has raised the alarm over the escape of an inmate from the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre in Maiduguri.
The command, in a statement issued in Maiduguri, urged residents to remain vigilant and assist security agencies in locating the escapee.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, AB Thliza, said the name “JOHN ISEARL” appeared on the inmate’s prison uniform, according to the statement and accompanying material released by the service.
Thliza appealed to members of the public with information about the whereabouts of the escapee, or anyone reasonably suspected to be the fugitive, to report immediately to the nearest police station, NCoS facility or other security agency.
“For further urgent information, please call on 0806 044 836, 0806 211 0090 and 0806 277 6875,” he said.
The command, however, warned members of the public against attempting to apprehend the escapee themselves, stressing that any information should be channeled through the appropriate security authorities.
“Your cooperation is crucial to ensuring public safety,” Thliza said.
The NCoS has, in recent years, recorded escapes from correctional facilities in different parts of the country. In August 2025, for instance, 16 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Center in Keffi, Nasarawa State. The service said seven had subsequently been recaptured while security agencies continued efforts to locate the remaining escapees.
The Borno command did not, in the statement announcing the latest escape, disclose the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s escape, the time it occurred, his alleged offense, detention status, or whether any official had been arrested or disciplined over the incident.
It also did not provide further identifying details beyond the name appearing on the inmate’s uniform.
