Like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram users will now pay for verification.
Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, in a Facebook post on Sunday, announced rollout plans for Meta Verified, a monthly subscription service that allows users to verify their social media accounts with a government-verified identity card.
Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
According to Zuckerberg, apart from letting users get a blue badge, Meta Verified also gives users extra protection from impersonation and direct access to customer support.
“This week we’re starting to roll out Meta Verified — a subscription service that lets you verify your account with a government ID, get a blue badge, get extra impersonation protection against accounts claiming to be you, and get direct access to customer support. This new feature is about increasing authenticity and security across our services,” Zuckerberg wrote.
Zuckerberg said that a gradual test of the new service will commence in Australia and New Zealand this week and more countries will follow suit.
“Meta Verified starts at $11.99 / month on the web or $14.99 / month on iOS,” he added.
Last year, Twitter started selling its verified badge for $8 monthly for the web and $11 monthly for iOS shortly after Elon Musk took over the company.
