NewsNigeriaPoliticsEnugu Electorates Patiently Waited For BVAS, Labour Party Garnered Majority Votes

The Labour Party on Saturday got the majority of votes cast in Enugu on the Presidential and House of Representatives 2023 election.

Despite all the hitches experienced at the beginning of the elections, the people patiently waited to exercise their civic responsibility.

In most polling units in the state, the Independent National Electoral Commission ad hoc staff arrived the venue by 11:30am while in some cases as late as 2pm on Saturday 25th February 2023.

In polling unit 014 in Ugbo Odogwu Primary School, Trans Ekulu in Enugu East Local Government Area, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, was brought to the venue at exactly 2:31pm.

The Presiding Officer and her assistants explained, “Our Supervisory Presiding Officer was supposed to sign for the BVAS machine and assign it to us; we are still expecting her.”

Every attempt to get across to the SPO assigned to the Ward proved abortive, as she did not answer her calls.

Although some persons had become restless and wanted to scatter the polling unit 014, others pacified them to exercise patience and see the electoral process to the end.

“Bros no allow these INEC people to ruin our brother Peter Obi’s chance o; these delays na tactical delay and any violent act here go lead to cancellation of this unit result; make we wise o,” a man was heard advising them in pidgin language.

On getting to the unit at about 2:31pm, the SPO did not offer any explanation to the people but handed the BVAS to her colleagues who immediately started accreditation and voting.

Except for this glitch, the election was free and fair; a majority of the electorates stayed back until the votes were counted and uploaded.

For the first time in history of Nigeria elections, the Party Agents were not the main watchdogs, but the electorates; the desire for a New Nigeria was so palpable.

Many voted for LP in House of Representatives simply because of Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of Labour party;

“I do not know the LP House of Reps candidate; all I know is mama, papa and pikin party, I am tired of other parties,” a woman in her 70s said after voting.

In Ugbo Odogwu Primary school, Trans Ekulu, polling unit 024, LP Presidential result is 288 votes, PDP 2 and APC 1 while in Polling Unit 015, LP got 295 votes, PDP 6 and ZLP 1.
