Former staff of Nigeria Ports Authority, Nasiru Ogara has been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment over N24.3m fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had charged Nasiru Ogara before Ikeja Special Offences Court on a four-count charge and his company, New Age Motor Waste Basket Ltd.

Nwandu Ukoha to the Commission’s counsel said Ogara induced the Director of Kelly Newton Nigeria Ltd, Usman Ademoye, in 2017, to confer a benefit on him by delivering 8,000 units of waste bin worth N5.2 million to him in the understanding that the waste bins would be paid for.

EFCC explained that Ogara persuaded Ademoye to confer a benefit on him by delivering copies of Kogi state vehicle consolidated documents worth N19.1 million to him in the understanding that the documents would be paid for.

The first defendant was said to have issued dud cheques to the complainant, though they were acquitted on count 4, but found guilty on counts 1, 2, and 3.

In her verdict on Wednesday, The presiding judge, Mojisola Dada, said the prosecution proved the case beyond a reasonable doubt and therefore sentenced Ogara to 14 years in prison on counts 1 and 2, and a two-year sentence on counts 3.

Judge Dada, while imposing a fine of N15 million on Ogara company, said the sentences should run concurrently.
