…NWC zoning to South-South justified
Following the zoning of Senate President position to the South-South and the subsequent nomination of Senator Godswill Akpabio by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ali Ndume has applauded the party leadership for what he called a job well done, even as he warned his colleagues not to collect money from any aspirant.
Ndume speaking during an interview on Monday said that he was disappointed when one of the Senators called him and asked me what he wanted. He said that he was disgusted with him but he (the Senator) later called him to apologize.
Ndume said, “Senators are men of integrity and so I have told them not to collect money from any aspirant. Even though I heard that money has changed hands, nobody has approached me to say that he would give me money.
Speaking about what he expects from the 10th Senate, he said, “I was the first among the contestants who indicated interest in writing that I wanted to be Senate President, with a 10 point agenda and this agenda are things that I feel if we make it our programme in the 10th Senate it will bring back the integrity to the Senate, in all these I put the National interest first, the institution second and own my interest third.
“Assuming Akpabio becomes President under the condition that we are trying to lay down, he will be Senate President and not Senators President. Zoning to the South-South is justified.
“Akpabio is coming in as a former Governor. He was our former colleague, he was the minority leader while I was majority leader.
“From among those that are contesting, based on fairness on which I said that the Senate President should go to the South.
He added, “For me even though I was in the contest it is only fair that somebody from the South-South or the South-East should be the next Senate President and that person should also have experience, must be a ranking member.
“I have a candidate in the South-East I would have preferred, and I have a candidate who is now Akpabio. I led his campaign as Director General. When the President-elect told him that he was his preferred candidate but that he must get the number.
“Already we have 68 Senators who have appended their signatures and I am sure that by the grace of God he will emerge the Senate President,” Ndume said.
