Exactly 54 days after the 2023 general election, the complete results of the presidential polls are yet to be uploaded on the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal.
The general election was held on Saturday, February 25, 2023, for presidential and National Assembly elections and elections for 28 of the 36 governorships and State Houses of Assembly followed on Saturday, March 18.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, introduced a technology, the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, for the 2023 general election to ensure a free, fair and credible election.
The BVAS was touted to guarantee a transparent voters’ accreditation and upload of polling unit results on the IReV for the electorate to view in real-time on election day.
However, the conduct of the presidential election went south when the electoral commission reneged on its promise to upload results directly from the polling units via the BVAS machines on its portal and also went ahead to declare the winner of the election.
Checks by The West African Pilot News reveal that as of Thursday, May 11, 2023, only results from 381 Local Government Areas, LGAs, out of 774 LGAs have been uploaded on the IReV.
Also, out of the 176,846 polling units where the presidential election was held, the results from 167,443 polling units have been uploaded on the portal, which indicates 94.68 per cent of the results.
While all the states of the federation have successfully uploaded results from at least one polling unit in an LGA, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, has yet to do so.
The last upload was done on March 25, 2023, at 10:36 p.m., indicating a worrisome delay in the process which has continued to call into question the credibility of the electoral process and the outcome of the election.
Meanwhile, for breaching the law by failing to use the BVAS electronic machines to upload results from polling units for real-time viewing, Atiku Abubakar from the main opposition party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, and Labour Party’s Peter Obi are asking the Appeal Court to invalidate the election won by Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, party.
After weeks of expectation, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal commenced sitting on Monday, May 8 to hear the petitions challenging the outcome of the disputed presidential election. Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the verdict of the Tribunal.
