“You are enjoined to pay a total sum of N18,640,092 to government coffers…within seven days,” reads the letter from the Lagos Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, that made Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo take to social media to vent her anger on the Lagos State Government.

According to the letter dated May 22, 2023, the actress has a tax liability of N7,376,000.00 for the 2022 income year and an outstanding liability of N11,264,092 for 2021 which amounts to a total of N18,640,092.

Consequently, she was given seven days, which elapsed on Monday, May 29, to clear the debt or face the consequences of defaulting.

“Failure to comply with the above directive, this office would in addition to the tax impose penalty and interest as provided for in Sections 76 & 77 of the referenced act,” the letter read.

Sharing the letter on her Instagram page yesterday, Ojo, overwhelmed with the unreasonable amount, questioned the basis for calculating the personal income taxes.

“Jidesanwoolu, @lagosstategovt, please, how do you people come up with these outrageous personal income taxes you send on a daily basis?” she queried.

“After paying different types of taxes for one’s businesses, house & all…. you still come up with all this huge amount and give me 7 days to pay up, lol. Make I go thief ni? I ask again, how do you (sic) people come up with such outrageous bills?”

Accusing the Lagos State Government of its insensitivity to the economic challenges in the country, the actress remarked that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led government “feels so entitled” to reap where it did sow.

Her post reads: “What have you people ever done for me as a government? NOTHING!!! I have single-handedly raised my kids & so many others, plus myself without a single penny from the government. Yet you feel so entitled to reap over 100% from where you did not sow.”

“I have worked, and I’m still working tirelessly to survive in this country without the support of the government, but yet you just sit in your office and come up with different outrageous bills. Nothing is working right in this country, but yet you feel the need to take from where you have not sown.”

She insisted that “what I do not have, I cannot give”, daring the state government to “come and close down my business, arrest me, jail me, or kill me.”

“Since you guys insist, you can gladly come and close down my business, arrest me, jail me, or kill me for all I care, we all will die one day and I will never be afraid of what will eventually be everyone’s fate. What I do not have, I cannot give. I have no FEAR.”.

A few hours after the post went viral, Ojo deleted it for undisclosed reasons.
