It was melodramatic as some men later to be identified as officers of the Department of State Services – DSS, stormed the premises of Anambra State House of Assembly in Awka, around 2pm on Thursday, and attempted to abduct Sir Onyedikachukwu Ike, House of Assembly member-elect, Nnewi North constituency. But luck ran out of the abductors when the House of Assembly security, the clerk, members of the House, media, staffers, and others withn the complex at the time prevailed on them, and foiled attempt to whisk him away. It was a shocking sight that provoked all who witnessed the absurdity right in the legislative complex of Anambra State and the action was roundly condemned by all who came out and insisted that they cannot leave the complex with Mr. Ike. The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor while he was intervening on the matter insisting that the team who carried out the operation cannot leave, was joined by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyedikachukwu Ibezim, who also insisted that the member-elect who was already taken into one of the vehicles of the abductors, must be freed. By then, it was clear that there was no way Hon. Ike can be taken out of the complex, he was thereupon freed.
The team came into the Assembly with three unmarked vehicles, without any form of communication with the House security personnel or the leadership of the Assembly and went in search of Hon. Onyedikachukwu Ike who was in the House to fine-tune his documents ahead of swearing-in next week.
It has now been revealed that the attempt to abduct Hon. Onyedikachukwu Ike is not unconnected to some village issues in Nnewi, involving Chief Cletus Ibeto over some communal land dispute, which Chief Ibeto reportedly accuse the former of championing demolition of his fenced wall around the disputed communal land in Nnewi. However, the said demolition could not have been undertaken nor in the least championed by Ike. Instead, evidence of the demolition clears all doubts that it was conducted by the government.
Although, there are those who believe that Hon. Onyedikachukwu Ike is bullied by Chief Ibeto because of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, over differences between Ubah and Ibeto. For those in this group, to that extent, everything else is mere smokescreen.
In March amidst these heated differences, Hon. Ike got overwhelmingly elected into Anambra State House of Assembly on Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah’s party, YPP in what many see as the first of its kind in Nnewi, much to the shock of Chief Ibeto who had said before the election that Ifeanyi Ubah would never go back to the senate. Now, not only that Ubah went back to the senate, he also secured Nnewi North Assembly seat for Ike, who is not a fan of Chief Ibeto.
However it is looked at, it does appears to be a family issue that ordinarily should not be escalated beyond family meeting in Nnewi.
