Hon. Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, member and Chief Whip of Anambra State 7th House of Assembly, who represented Onitsha South II constituency, through the 5th, 6th, and 7th Assembly, a total of three terms of twelve years, has wrapped up her exit on Sunday, with a thanksgiving service. The thanksgiving outing was followed by a well attended reception in appreciation to God and her constituents.
In a way, Hon. Beverly’s voyage into politics was nearly miraculous, but not strange considering her background. Beverly is the daughter of Justice Chuba Ikpeazu now late, and sister of Onyechi Ikpeazu renowned lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria – SAN, as well as sister of Hon. Lynda Chuba Ikpeazu who has equally served out her third term in office as member of House of Representatives. With such a family background, perhaps, for Beverly, going into public life was only a matter of time.
Since joining politics, Hon. Beverly has been a member of APGA and for three times secured the party’s ticket for Onitsha South II constituency and went on to win the general election. In the 5th Assembly, she was one of the few women House members. Then, in the 6th Assembly, she also survived as one of the less than a handful of women members of the Assembly. But eventually, in the 7th Assembly, Hon. Beverly was the only woman House member which she has now transferred to the incoming Assembly with also just one woman member.
The thanksgiving outing on Sunday which started at Our Saviours Church in Onitsha, later moved to the Ikpeazu’s family house also in Onitsha and was attended by numerous government officials, her colleagues in the 5th, 6th, and 7th Assembly, and members of the incoming 8th Assembly, friends and well wishers. Her elder brother Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu was also in attendance. Her constituents were fully in attendance as well.
In the House of Assembly, Hon. Beverly will be remembered for her very bold and audacious takes on issues which ordinarily, politicians try to play safe. As the Chief Whip of the 7th Assembly, she will be remembered for her distinct voice when she says “one House please”, at times when the House was unsettled. In all, Hon. Beverly was a firm and consummate legislator.
Her thanksgiving outing on Sunday signals the end of an era, both for her and her constituents and it is left to be seen what the new representative has for the people of Onitsha South II, and as well as what more the government and public stand to gain from her years of service and experience, as an accomplished lawmaker.
