Due to pains occasioned by subsidy removal on Nigerians, the House of Representatives has granted the request of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for an amendment to the 2022 appropriation act to allow the government take five hundred billion naira for palliatives to cushion the effects of the policy.
The House approved the President’s request after deliberation by members who called for proper utilization of the funds for the purpose intended.
Leader of the House, Julius Ihonvbare who presented the request to members for debate said the country now have a President who listens to the yearnings of the people.
However, the Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, said explained that the yardstick to measure a government is when it is responsible and responsive, urging the House put in place mechanism to monitor the utilization of the palliatives and ensure that the purpose is achieved.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has said 12 million families will get N8,000 over a period of six months to cushion hardships faced by Nigerians as a result of subsidy removal.
The Speaker Tajudeen Abbas who read the letter on the floor of the House during plenary, the President said the money was support for poor and vulnerable Nigerians and to help them meet some basic needs.
The President noted that it would have a multiplier effect on about 60 million individuals and digital transfers would be made directly to beneficiaries’ accounts in order to guarantee the credibility of the process.
