New and returning students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, will be paying over N100,000 as school fees effective the first semester of the 2023/24 session, The West African Pilot News has learned.
The increment in fees was proposed on Thursday at a meeting between the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, and the representatives of the non-teaching unions of the institution comprising of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU.
“Students without lab or studio use would pay N100,750, those with lab use would pay N140,250 and college of medicine undergraduates would pay N190,250,” a viral minute of the meeting by SSANU reads.
The school management also announced the adjustment in fees on its website on Friday, July 21.
According to the statement by the management, the approved fees for courses without lab/studio and courses with lab/studio for new undergraduate students is N126,325 and N176,325, respectively.
Returning students with and without lab/studio will now pay N100,750 and N140,250 while medical students are to pay N190,250.
This is excluding the N10,000 toxicology test for screening for first-year students and the convocation fee of N30,000 for final-year students as well as the undetermined charges for field trips where such is a mandatory requirement of the course of study. All undergraduate students are also expected to pay N20,000 as utility charges.
The management explains, “The adjustment in fees, which will take effect from the first semester, 2023/2024 academic session, is in view of the prevailing economic realities and the need for the university to be able to meet its obligations to its students, staff, and municipal service providers among others.”
But the children of staff members are to pay in installments. They are expected to finish the payment a month before their final examinations.
“The SSANU representative, Rasaki Yusuf, requested a rebate for staff members with children in the university, but the Vice Chancellor explained that the charges were set nationally and could not be modified for specific student categories,” SSANU’s minutes of the meeting with the VC read.
“However, she offered the option of paying in installments for staff wards with a condition to pay up one month before the final exams.”
Social media influencer Pamilerin Adegoke, in a tweet, disclosed that the changes have already been effected.
