NewsNigeriaPoliticsTinubu sets strategic standards for ministers at maiden FEC meeting

Setting the tone for his administration at the maiden Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting on Monday, President Bola Tinubu tasked the cabinet members to turn things around for Nigerians by performing at their best.

The cabinet is made up of the 45 ministers who scaled through the Senate screening and were inaugurated on Monday, August 21.

While noting that their appointments are a call to serve the people, President Tinubu charged the ministers to reform the economy for sustainable growth without any lamentation or excuses.

“Nigerians expect a lot from all of us. We willingly accepted the appointment and I accepted the mandate of Nigerians,” he said.

“We shall evolve a homegrown re-engineering of our finances, a reimagined stewardship of our resources, and we will let the economy work for the people of this country. There are so many things we can and will do.

“Yes, some cynics will say it is impossible. But in your own dictionary of service, everything is possible, and it must be possible. We have the talents; we have the level of intellectual capacity to turn this country around.”

President Tinubu explained that the policies and programmes to be rolled out by the ministers must “reform the economy, ensure inclusive growth and strengthen security for peace and prosperity.”

He added, “You and I know that expectations are high, and these are tough times. We must work hard and move ourselves to create a buoyant economy that will serve Nigeria.

“We must unlock the energy and natural resources of this country. We must start producing for ourselves, and dig ourselves out of the hole. We must focus on education, healthcare, and social investment that is essential for the development of our people.”

The President urged the cabinet members not to be daunted by the myriad of challenges they will encounter. “Don’t be afraid to make decisions. That’s the burden of leadership,” he said.

“Imagine yourselves that in this situation you have been called upon to fetch water from a dry well. The challenges are there but we will deliver for Nigerians.”

Also in attendance at the meeting were the Vice-President, Kashim Shettima; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume; the Head of Service of the Federation, Folashade Yemi-Esan; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.

Against the usual practice of Wednesdays, the FEC meeting will now be held on Mondays.
