The annual budget of the National Assembly has been stagnant for 13 years despite “inflation and attendant consequences”.
Dr Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives stated this when he received a visiting delegation of the African Business Roundtable.
“Our budget has been stagnant for 13 years, but our expenditure has gone up within the period. In fact, at some points, the National Assembly budget came down from what it used to be in 2011,” he said.
Dr. Abbas maintained that the expenditure of the federal legislature has risen within the period without the commensurate budgetary provisions to back it up.
According to the Speaker, the 10th House had created over 60 parliamentary friendship committees to enhance the relationship with other parliaments across the continent.
The leader of the delegation, Dotun Ajayi noted the recent coup in the Niger Republic brought a new dimension to engagements between some European states, and added that the EU has set aside at least 20 billion Euros for Sub-Saharan Africa.
