…IPOB dismisses reports, taunts military

Nigerian soldiers under Operation Udo Ka, a military task force checkmating insurgency in the South East region, have cracked the hideouts of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Anambra and Imo states.

The strikes by fighter jets of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Tuesday (Sept. 26) were in response to a tip-off that the IPOB fighters had planned a secret rendezvous to conclude plans of launching an attack on residents of both states and the entire region, NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet revealed on Wednesday.

The successful strikes were carried out at Mother Valley Orsumughu in the Nnewi South local government area of Anambra State and Aku Ihube in the Okigwe local government area of Imo State.

“Acting on credible intelligence that IPOB/ESN terrorists had perfected plans to disrupt civic activities lined up in the coming days in Anambra and other southeastern states,” Gabkwet said.

“The air strikes were authorised in conjunction with ground troops and other security agencies on the location believed to also house some of their weapons and ammunitions.

“The strikes hit the target and were deemed successful following the ball of fire, fleeing terrorists at the location, as well as feedback received.”

Gabkwet, the director of NAF’s public relations and information, assured that NAF, alongside other security agencies, will continue to fight the “criminal elements” to ensure that “Nigerians, irrespective of where they reside, are safe and free to conduct their activities without fear or being threatened will continue.”

Meanwhile, IPOB has dismissed the NAF’s claims, saying the bombed hideouts belong to “criminals impersonating IPOB and ESN in their violent activities in the name of Biafra struggle.”

The secessionist group also mocked the Nigerian military for being so concerned about the activities of IPOB while the North burns with terrorist activities.

“If the Nigeria Air force has functioning fighter jets to bomb criminal hideouts in the rainforest of the Southeast, why then have they not bombed terrorists and bandits who are in the open in the desert lands of the North, killing kidnapping people as well as Secondary School children?”, a statement by Emma Powerful, IPoB’s Media and Publicity Secretary read.

“We wish to remind the Nigerian government and the Nigerian Air force that some communities in the northern region of Nigeria are under the control of Boko Haram, ISWAP terrorists, and Fulani bandits, who are moving freely, abducting school children and farmers, while their State Governors and the Federal Government of Nigeria are negotiating with the criminals and bandits.”
