The Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah has banned the sale of handouts to students of the Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu.
The ban is expedient so as to address financial pressures on students, improve financial accountability, and ensure transparency; also banned is the collection of revenue through third parties, the toilet levy, and sundry other fees students were made to pay aside from the official school fees and employment without strict adherence to meritocracy.
The State Government disclosed this information during the inauguration of the 6-man committee set up to implement recommendations of the panel set up months back to investigate the renowned institute.
The Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu modeled after the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA had so deteriorated and a shadow of itself hence the government setting up a committee to investigate the state of affairs in the Institute, unravel the root cause of the decadence and proffer recommendations.
Another committee was on Monday set up by the Enugu State Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia to ensure implementation of the investigative panel’s report; SSG directed the IMT management to cooperate with the implementation committee so as to achieve the desired result.
“I invited the management of IMT to hear directly from the government and to understand that the committee that has been set up must have unfettered access to whatever documents that they may need to make sure that they do their work effectively in six-week time. This is very critical.”
“The work of this committee is very important because higher education will play a pivotal role in the capacity and legacy that we are planning to leave behind at the end of the time. All of us must work as a team to ensure that our state regains its glory across the entire ecosystem – education, infrastructure, environment, sports, among others,” SSG stated.
In his response, the Chairman Implementation Committee, Prof. Nwobodo, pledged the readiness of the committee to deliver on its mandate with every sense of rectitude and fear of God.
“We will start work immediately and I promise that we will not only give you a midterm report but also periodic reports as may be necessary; we hope that we’ll continue to receive cooperation from the management, who will be working with us and it is unique to have them sit here at the inauguration,” Nwobodo stated.
The Rector, of IMT, Prof. Austin Nweze, also assured the state government that the management of the Institute will accord the committee all the needed cooperation to deliver on its mandate for the good of the institution.
The six-man panel led by Prof. Ed Nwobodo (Chairman), Judy Nweke (Secretary and a representative of the Civil Society Organizations), Sylvanus Ogbodo, Chinenye Ozoagu, Prof. Obiamaka Egbo, and Dr. Moses Otiji as members.
