The British government has advised British nationals against travelling to Borno, Yobe Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States of Nigeria over potential terrorist attacks.
An advisory on the UK government’s website updated on Saturday [Oct. 4] says “There is a high threat of criminal and terrorist kidnap throughout Nigeria”, also warning that “incidents of banditry and inter-communal violence frequently occur throughout Nigeria. Attacks can occur without warning.”
Ahead of this weekend’s off-cycle gubernatorial election in Imo, Bayelsa and Kogi states, U.K’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office [FCDO] said “There is a heightened risk of rallies and demonstrations which could turn violent.”
According to the FCDO, “Political rallies, protests and violent demonstrations can occur with little notice throughout the country.”
The FCDO further advises that U.K citizens avoid non-essential travels to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Niger, Sokoto State, Kogi, Abia, Plateau, Taraba, Anambra, Imo, non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States, and within 20km of the border with Niger in Kebbi State.
“Terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks in Nigeria, including indiscriminate attacks against crowded public locations,” the UK travel advice notes.
“Discretion and judgement should be used with regard to activity in public places including large hotels, with visitors encouraged to remain vigilant and alert while paying attention to their surroundings at all times.”
