NewsNigeriaNLC and TUC threaten nationwide strike November 14 as strike cripples Imo

Nigerian workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, plan to boycott work next Tuesday, November 14.

The decision was reached at a meeting of the National Executive Councils of both unions in Abuja on Tuesday.

The planned strike is in solidarity with the ongoing labour strike in Imo State.

The NLC and TUC on Tuesday directed all workers affiliated with the unions in Imo State to down their tools starting Wednesday [today].

The strike in Imo State is to revolt against “the persistent and egregious violations of the rights and privileges of workers in Imo State by the State Government.”

It is also to protest the “abduction and assault” of the NLC President, Joe Ajaero during a protest last week.

“All workers and affiliates are expected to ensure compliance from wherever they are,” Festus Osifo, the TUC president and NLC deputy president said in a communique published at the end of Tuesday’s joint meeting.

“All flights into and out of Imo state, fuel supplies and Electricity be stopped immediately as applicable. All Public and Private Sector workers are to immediately down tools indefinitely.”

The NLC and TUC accuse Governor Hope Uzodimma of repeatedly reneging on agreements, most notably the accord reached on January 9, 2021, between the government and the unions.

Governor Uzodimma is also accused of withholding the salaries of about 11,000 civil servants for 20 months, branding them as “ghost workers”, among others.
