To ensure environment free of any form of hazard, the Ogun State Government has shut down an agro-processing company named, Supreme Agro Limited in Igbesa, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state over industrial pollution.
The Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya accused the company of engaging in serious industrial pollution that has destroyed the ecosystem of their host community.
“The company was found guilty of industrial pollution as it discharges its untreated wastewater into Igbesa the host community which has greatly affected the well-being of residents of the area.”
“Rather than installing effluent plants that would contain the wastewater and remove hazardous components before discharging them to surrounding water bodies, the company bye-passed the plant and discharged the wastewater directly into the community, constituting an eyesore and impacting negatively on the environment.”
“The wastewater had hazardous components such as heavy metals in them as carcinogenic materials and chemicals are injurious to the people, leading to unwarranted deaths,” he said.
Oresanya said the company will remain closed until it restores the environment to normal and more responsible in its production processes and carries its host community along.
The Commissioner also saluted the Igbesa Traditional Council for alerting the state government on the unethical environmental practices of by the company.
