Sunday Okoebor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was shot dead by gunmen who stormed a residential area in Asaba, the capital city of Delta State on Tuesday morning for a robbery operation.

The robbers gunned down the cop during a fierce exchange of gunfire with the police who were battling to foil the robbery.

The police were nearly overpowered by the gunmen when troops of the Nigerian Army in Asaba dubbed “Operation Still Water II” arrived at the scene in response to a “distress call about the robbery.”

“We got there and met an exchange of gunfire. The robbers had gunned down a police officer and our men engaged them in another gun duel,” Chief of Staff of the 63 Brigade Headquarters in Asaba, Colonel Ibrahim Gambari said in a statement.

The police and army joint team captured ten of the robbers.

“Two of the suspects were shot and captured along with eight others, while two others managed to escape with bullet wounds,” Gambari said.

The security agencies afterwards combed the area and arrested 125 suspected criminals but only eight identified by residents “as those who have been robbing them of their properties and terrorising their areas” were taken into custody.

“We are going to hand them over to the police,” Gambari said.

Items recovered from the suspects include locally-made pistols with live cartridges, laptops, phones and other electronic gadgets stolen from residents of the neighbourhood.
