The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has raised alarm over the attack on its electoral commissioner in Kogi State, Dr Hale Gabriel Longpet.

In a social media post on Friday, INEC said the Longpet’s residence in Lokoja came under siege by unknown gunmen around 3:30 a.m. today.

It rained bullets as the gunmen and security guards exchanged fire.

The bandits fled after minutes of futile attempts to penetrate the building.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, and his family were unharmed, but a vehicle was razed.

The attack on Longpet is coming on the heels of the governorship election in the State on 18 November which Usman Ododo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, won.

The dust of last month’s poll has yet to settle. On Wednesday, a mob flocked to the INEC headquarters in Lokoja to protest against Ododo’s victory.

INEC is calling for a “thorough investigation and enhanced security protection for our personnel and assets in Kogi State.”
