Rhoda Adamu Jatau who was jailed in a Bauchi prison for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammed has been freed.
She was granted bail last Friday, 8 December, following intervention from Christian associations, civil society organisations and human rights activists.
The mother of five was arrested in her hometown in the Warji LGA of Bauchi State on 20 May 2022 after sharing a video of a man condemning the mob lynching of a Christian college student, Deborah Emmanuel in Sokoto State the week prior on a WhatsApp channel.
Bauchi authorities charged her with “inciting public disturbance as well as insulting and exhibiting contempt of religious creed” under sections 114 and 210 of the 2006 Bauchi State Penal Code and refused to grant her bail.
“Her bail was consistently denied, and she has been held behind bars ever since,” Yunusa Ya’u, the executive director of the Centre for Information Technology and Development, CITAD, in Bauchi said.
Her bail application, brought by her lawyer, Joseph Danboyi, was heard and granted by Justice Fatima Jibrin of Bauchi State High Court 11 on Friday.
