Two policemen on escort duty were on Saturday beaten to death by a group of irate youths in Edo State. Two other officers were seriously wounded.
The mob descended on the policemen after they ran over a commercial motorbike, killing the driver along with a woman and her child.
An alarm was raised by eyewitnesses and as angry youths started to run to the scene of the accident, the policemen fled to a nearby vigilante office for safety.
The mob attacked the office, overpowered the local guards and dragged the officers out.
They beat them until two dropped dead. The vigilantes were only able to rescue the other two from the hands of their attackers.
The policemen were the details of the former member of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje.
They were identified as Inspector Brownson Brown, Inspector Abubakar Fakkuk, Sergeant Taiye Ojiefo and Sergeant Elisha John of the Police Mobile Force 19, Port Harcourt. Fakkuk and John were killed.
