A police officer and a civilian were shot dead in Anyigba, the commercial district of Dekina LGA in Kogi State, on Thursday evening during a chilling bank robbery.
The heavily armed gunmen stormed Anyigba, 116 kilometres from Kogi’s capital city Lokoja at about 5:00 p.m.
Channels Television reported that they made a brief stop at Anyigba town police station, and gunned down a police officer while disarming others before heading to the banks.
The banks attacked were First Bank and Access Bank. The attacks took place simultaneously.
Residents reported heavy gunfire at and around the commercial banks.
Amidst the chaos, residents scampered for safety, but a petty trader fell dead after being hit by a stray bullet.
The armed robbers stole millions from the banks’ vaults as they operated unchallenged for nearly an hour.
As they speeded off after the operation, they were engaged in a firefight by some security guards, but managed to evade the resistance.
Authorities are yet to speak on the robbery attack.
