The Nigerian Senate passed a bill on Thursday, 28th May 2024, to reinstate “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the country’s official national anthem.
This legislation, titled the National Anthem Bill 2024, seeks to replace the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” which has been in use since 1978.
“Nigeria, We Hail Thee” served as the national anthem during Nigeria’s first years of independence, from 1960 to 1978.
The bill breezed through both the first and second readings, indicating strong support within the Senate.
This follows the House of Representatives’ passage of the bill last Thursday.
Now, it awaits President Bola Tinubu’s signature to become law.
Nigerians wait with bated breath to see if President Tinubu will sign the bill, officially reviving “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” as the national anthem.
