Nigeria faces a potential economic shutdown as the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, launches an indefinite nationwide strike beginning at midnight Sunday. The strike is a response to the federal government’s refusal to raise the minimum wage and reverse the recent increase in electricity tariff.
NLC national president Joe Ajaero announced the strike at a press briefing on Friday, citing failed negotiations with the government.
The union demands an increase in the minimum wage from the N60,000 proposed by the government and opposes the electricity tariff hike, arguing it squeezes Nigerians already facing high inflation.
The NLC along with the Trade Union Congress, TUC, had given the federal government until 31st May to come up with a better minimum wage proposal, threatening industrial action.
“Today is May 31, 2024, and this night the ultimatum expires. So we hereby declare the commencement of a nationwide Industrial action effective from Monday, June 3rd, 2024 and this strike shall be indefinite,” said Ajaero.
“The strike shall be on until we have a new national minimum wage and until the government is serious and the increase in electricity tariff is reversed. We are united on this and we believe this is the way forward.”
The NLC is urging all workers to join the strike while demanding the government return to the negotiating table to address their concerns.
“We cannot and will not accept any further delays or excuses. The welfare of Nigerian workers and people is non-negotiable, and we are ready to take all necessary steps to ensure that their rights are protected and their voices heard,” Ajaero added.
“We regret the inconveniences this refusal of the federal government to heed our demands may cause all of us but we assure you of our determination to pursue this cause to its conclusion.”
