The convener of the planned #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protest in Sokoto State, Bashar Binji, announced the abrupt withdrawal of his group from the nationwide demonstrations on Wednesday evening.
In a press briefing, Binji cited credible intelligence suggesting that hoodlums were planning to infiltrate the protest, targeting markets, banks, and government buildings.
According to Binji, the Sokoto Marketers Association alerted the Department of State Services, DSS, to a plot to attack markets in the state.
“Moreover, there is another security report indicating that another group has perfected plans to attack banks and other government properties,” he added.
“As responsible citizens, we do not want to give them that opportunity. We have therefore resolved to withdraw from the planned protest for the safety of all the residents and their properties.”
The withdrawal of the Sokoto protest comes amidst growing concerns about potential security breaches during the demonstrations across the country though the organisers of the protests have maintained their focus on peaceful advocacy.
As the situation evolves, security agencies have been urged to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to prevent any disturbances.
