Some protesters on Sunday in Jos, Plateau State who marched along Bauchi Road have warned business owners to either support the demonstration by closing their shops today (Monday) or face potential damage to their properties.
The protesters who issued the warning criticized President Bola Tinubu’s Sunday broadcast, arguing that it failed to address the nation’s pressing issues.
To protect the lives and properties and forestall any breakdown of law and order, the Plateau State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas.
Gyang Bere, Director of Press and Public Affairs to Governor Caleb Mutfwang in a press statement said the curfew was imposed after criminals, armed with daggers, machetes, and other weapons, broke into shops and restaurants on Bauchi Road and Zololo Junction in Jos North.
“The imposition of this curfew is in the best interest of all citizens and to prevent the situation from deteriorating,” the statement said.
The statement added that Governor Mutfwang had warned those planning further violence sternly, urging them to desist immediately or face severe legal consequences.
Since the #EndBadGovernance protest began on August 1, about 4 states in Northern Nigeria imposed curfew following arson, vandalism, and massive looting.
Meanwhile, the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Aisha Rufai-Ibrahim has advised heads of Islamic schools to prevent their students from participating in ongoing protests.
She appealed during a visit to schools in Lafia following reports of Almajiri children participating in recent hunger protests, highlighting concerns about the involvement of minors in such activities.
The Police Public Relations Officer, in the State Lawan Shiisu Adamu announced the arrest of 37 suspects in connection with various crimes, including theft from Senator Babangida Hussaini’s properties.
