NewsNigeriaPoliticsSome Presidential Candidates Sign Peace Accord Over Peaceful Election

Some Presidential candidates of political parties on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, in Abuja, signed a Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections, pledging to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the democratic process before, during, and after the elections.
The Peace Accord, therefore, seeks to establish a common commitment to peaceful political competition.
The signing of the accord held at the International Conference Center, Abuja, was organized by the National Peace Committee, as political activities intensified ahead of the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.
The Peace Accord is designed to commit presidential candidates and their political parties to issue-based campaigns, peaceful political engagement, rejection of violence and hate speech, as well as respect for the outcome of a free, fair and credible election.
Among the presidential candidates at the event are Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Donald Duke of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), while the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, represented President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Chairman of the National Peace Committee and former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has consistently stressed the importance of restraint and responsible political conduct, warning that political competition must not become a trigger for violence or threaten national unity.
General Abdulsalami Abubakar, represented by Bishop Matthew Kukah, said the responsibility of safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy rests on political actors, institutions and citizens alike.
Speaking during stakeholder engagement on the Peace Accord, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan, has also called on political actors and other stakeholders to work collectively towards restoring public confidence in the electoral process and ensuring peaceful participation in the 2027 elections.
Amupitan said: “Let the process be so transparent that whoever emerges will not only have legality but legitimacy,” stressing the importance of credibility and public trust in the electoral process.
INEC says the electoral timetable is intended to provide adequate preparation for transparent, credible and inclusive elections.
Political stakeholders are expected to ensure that political differences do not degenerate into personal attacks, misinformation, intimidation or violence.
The 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled by INEC for February 20, 2027, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
