No fewer than 16 people have died and 3,936 households have been displaced by severe flooding across 10 local government areas in Jigawa State.
Haruna Mariga, Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), who revealed this on Wednesday, said the majority of fatalities were due to the collapse of mud houses and boat accidents.
He added that the disaster has also washed away 2,744 hectares of farmland, which had a severe impact on agricultural practices and livelihoods in the region.
“The flooding has displaced 3,936 households, affecting 3,834 individuals. Additionally, 2,744 hectares of farmland have been destroyed, and as of Wednesday, 16 lives have been lost. The primary causes of death include canoe overloads, building collapses, and drowning.

“The situation may deteriorate further, potentially exacerbating the damage to families, livestock and crops,” Mariga said.
Similarly, over 5,000 households across 208 communities in 16 local government areas of Yobe state have been affected by either flood or windstorm from April 2024 to date.
The Yobe’ State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, disclosed the figure posted on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, and said it has also conducted a rapid needs assessment on victims in line with emergency best practices in Karasuwa, Yusufari, Machina, and Nguru local government areas.
“Already validation is ongoing and immediate needs and support in line with available resources will be delivered as directed by His Excellency Gov Mai Mala Buni,” it said.
The agency further reaffirmed its readiness to close the gaps and ensure victims are protected and supported within the available resources at its disposal.
