In a move aimed at strengthening regional security, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, yesterday met with the leadership of the Niger Republic’s military junta in Niamey, the country’s capital.
The meeting, which was confirmed through pictures posted by the counter-insurgency publication, Zagazola Makama, on X, was attended by top military brass from both countries.
General Musa, who is also the Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee of Defence Chiefs, was accompanied by a high-powered delegation that included Emmanuel Undiandeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
According to Zagazola Makama, the discussions were focused on enhancing security collaboration within the Sahel region, which has been heavily affected by terrorism and insurgency.
The meeting comes on the heels of General Musa’s recent call for the return of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso to the ECOWAS fold, following their resignation.
Details of the meeting, however, remain sketchy as the Nigerian military authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the issue.
