The Ogoja Road branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) in Ebonyi has donated N28.5 million to the State Government on the fight against the Coronavirus disease (COVID19).
Mr. Sam Agbo, branch Manager of the bank, made the presentation on Tuesday in Abakaliki at the new governor’s lodge, Centenary City.
Agbo noted that the donation was part of the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS), adding that the war against the dreaded virus should be a collective fight.
The branch manager lauded the stated government for the giant steps taken so far in creating awareness about the virus and equipping the virology centre and donating it for testing.
“The fund donation is our way of partnering with the state government in its determined commitment to contain the virus and ensure that it does not spread into the state.
“It is in line with our corporate social responsibility and we believe that the donation will assist the state government in its fight against the killer-virus,” Agbo said.
Responding, Gov. Dave Umahi commended the bank for the donation while appealing to other banks and corporate institutions to emulate the UBA.
Umahi, who was represented by the Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly (EBHA), Mr. Francis Nwifuru, explained that government had taken a number of proactive steps to contain the virus and prevent it from spreading into the state.
“We thank you for your support in this very trying time in our collective existence as a people. The state government has taken bold steps in ensuring that we tighten our borders in order to prevent the virus entering our state.
“While we commend you, we wish to appeal to wealthy individuals, other banks and corporate organisations to support us in this fight against COVID-19.
“The State Government will appreciate any material or monetary donations made to aid our fight against the virus,” Umahi said.
Also, the Building Materials Dealers Association (BMDA), Ebonyi has donated 72 pieces of water dispensing plastic buckets to the state government to assist residents in maintaining regular hand wash under running water.
Mr. Ifeanyi Nwudele who made the donation on behalf of the association assured that the members stood firmly with government at this critical period.
Nwudele lauded the government’s efforts in the fight against COVID19 and urged residents to complement the efforts by observing good health and environmental hygiene to stay safe from the pandemic.
