In a historic milestone for the Nigerian–American community, several Nigerian–American lawmakers secured their reelection in the 2024 midterm elections held on 5 November.

US Representative Dr Oye Owolewa, who represents Washington, D.C., continues to make strides as one of the first Nigerian-Americans elected to Congress. His re-election marks another chapter in his work advocating for the residents of Washington, D.C.

In Kansas, State Representative Kelechi “KC” Ohaebosim secured his seat for District 89 in Wichita. His re-election reflects the confidence of Kansas voters in his commitment to addressing community needs.

New Mexico’s District 19, which covers parts of Albuquerque, re-elected State Representative Janelle Anyanwu while Pennsylvania voters in Delaware County’s District 159 re-elected State Representative Carol Kazeem.

Minnesota’s Esther Agbaje, serving District 59B in Minneapolis, joined the ranks of the returning Nigerian-American representatives.

Georgia’s delegation of Nigerian-American state representatives all retained their seats: Hon. Segun Adeyina (District 110 – Grayson), Hon. Gabe Okoye (District 102 – Lawrenceville), Hon. Solomon Adesanya (District 43 – Marietta), and Hon. Phil Olaleye (District 59 – Atlanta).

The Nigerian–American community has expressed pride in these victories, viewing them as milestones that reflect the rising influence of Nigerians in American politics.

Supporters encouraged the lawmakers to “keep rising to the top,” urging them to continue their dedication to public service and to amplify the voices of Nigerian–Americans across the United States.
