The National Economic Council, NEC, has given Adamawa, Kwara, and Kebbi States along with the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, seven days to submit their positions on the proposed creation of state police.
NEC, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima, is a constitutional body comprising the 36 state governors, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and key government officials. It serves as an advisory council on economic planning and development across the federation.
Addressing State House correspondents on Thursday after the 146th NEC meeting at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, Bayelsa State Governor, Duoye Diri, explained that out of 36 states, only three and the FCT had yet to submit their positions on the proposal.
“On the state police, the council was updated with the submission of the establishment, and it was reported that 33 states have submitted their positions, while three states are yet to do so,” Diri said.
He added, “These three states are Adamawa, Kebbi and, incidentally, Kwara, which is the state of the Governors’ Forum’s Chairman, and the FCT are yet to submit their positions. The council mandated these remaining states and the FCT to make their submissions within the next one week.”
He noted that the NEC resolved to consolidate all submissions into a unified position, which will be presented for deliberation at the council’s next meeting.
The NEC’s decision is part of the ongoing debate on the creation of state police in Nigeria. Proponents argue that state police would be more effective in addressing local security challenges, while opponents raise concerns about the potential for abuse and the financial implications of establishing state police forces.
