NewsNigeriaPoliticsMinistry Issues Travel Advisory for Nigerians Planning to Visit Australia

Nigerians planning trips to Australia have been advised to stay alert due to rising cases of discrimination and harassment in certain cities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement on Tuesday, 31 December 2024, expressed concerns about increasing incidents of antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes in the country.

The ministry pointed to a troubling incident in early December in Woollahra, a Sydney suburb, where a car was torched, and anti-Israel graffiti was sprayed on nearby buildings.

“This event is part of a broader increase in both antisemitic and Islamophobic incidents in Australia, coinciding with international conflicts and tensions,” the statement explained.

Despite Australia’s multicultural reputation, the ministry urged Nigerians to be cautious and mindful of the cultural and social dynamics.

“The unfortunate recent surge in antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes in Australia has increased the risk of violence, hence the need for caution,” the statement added. “To this end, extra vigilance and necessary precautions are strongly recommended to ensure safety.”

Nigerians who experience or witness any form of racist attack are encouraged to contact the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra for support.

The High Commission is located at 26 Guilfoyle St, Yarralumla ACT 2600, Canberra, Australia. Phone: +61262158500. Email: chancery@nigeria-can.org.au.
