Following the alleged killing of three members of the Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herdsmen on Monday, irate youths in Gwer West LGA of Benue State on Tuesday morning set fire to the Local Government Secretariat in Naka and the palace of the Gwer West Traditional Council Chairman, HRH Daniel Abomtse.

The situation escalated when hoodlums allegedly hijacked the protest, leading to the burning of properties, including a hotel belonging to Senator Titus Zam, who represents Benue North West in the Senate.

The unrest eyewitnesses said the protest began at 7:00 am when the bodies of the slain security personnel were brought to Naka for burial.

The eye witness further said angered by the killings and the perceived government inaction against herdsmen attacks; the youths took to the streets.

The Chairman of Gwer West LGA, Victor Omirin said the demonstration was initially peaceful but later turned violent.

HRH Daniel Abomtse, who was away for medical reasons, confirmed the razing of his palace and valuables, including vehicles and motorcycles.

The Benue State Police Command, through its spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, stated that the Commissioner of Police had deployed tactical teams to restore order.

Meanwhile, Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has decried the killing of three members of Civil Protection Guards at On-MbaAondo, Tsambe-Mbesev ward of Gwer-West LGA.

The governor spoke in a statement by his spokesman, Tersoo Kula stated that the inhumane act, carried out by armed herdsmen, is a flagrant affront to the peace and security of Benue communities.

The statement said: “We appreciate the deep rage and frustration that has led to the anxiety at Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West, including the regrettable burning of the Local Government Secretariat and the palace of Ter Nagi by protesters

“While we empathize with the sentiments of our people, we advocate restraint and foresight in funneling this anger. Destruction of our own worths simply serves to frustrate the intentions of our government, which is devoted to building up peace and security in the state.

“We request all security organs to intensify their efforts in detecting and capturing the perpetrators of this heinous atrocity. It is essential that these marauding herdsmen are forced to do justice to ensure that they deal with the full wrath of the law.

“The security of our residents is paramount, and we will not rest until those culpable for this violence are held liable”.

The Governor emphasized that his government is working to enhance security efforts and protect communities from further attacks.

He added that: “We implore all citizens to stand vigilant and collaborate with security agencies in reporting unusual activities.

“In these trying moments, let us stand banded together against violence and endeavor for peace and justice in Benue State. Together, we can conquer these challenges and establish a healthier environment for all”.
