The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olalekan Nafiu, has assured corps members that the long-awaited increment in their monthly allowance to ₦77,000 will take effect from March 2025.
Speaking at the Wuse and Garki NYSC zonal offices in Abuja on Thursday, the NYSC boss reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promise.
NYSC spokesperson Caroline Embu quoted him stating, “With effect from March, you are going to receive the sum of ₦77,000 as your monthly allowance.”
This increment follows President Bola Tinubu’s enactment of the ₦70,000 minimum wage law in July 2024.
Previously, in 2020, the allowance had been raised from ₦19,800 to ₦33,000, aligning with the then-new minimum wage of ₦30,000.
The delay in implementing the new allowance has been a concern among corps members, especially given the country’s rising inflation.
In a recent incident, a Lagos-based corps member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, identified on TikTok as @talktoraye, expressed her frustration over the escalating cost of living and the delayed allowance increment.
Her emotional video gained widespread attention, leading to her being summoned by the NYSC authorities.
Amnesty International criticised the NYSC’s response, emphasising the corps member’s right to free speech and urging the government to address the economic challenges faced by citizens.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Nafiu urged corps members to remain disciplined, focused, and dedicated to national service.
He assured them that the NYSC remains committed to fostering patriotism, leadership, and teamwork among Nigerian youths.
