The Enugu State Government has assured the Federal Government of Nigeria of its readiness to partner with it in relocating the Enugu Correctional Centre, currently located at GRA, to a new site outside the metropolis.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah made this assurance on Wednesday when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions at the state Government House, Enugu; the Committee Chairman, Chinedu Ogah, led the team.
“It is highly commendable that the Federal Government has sanctioned the relocation of Enugu Correctional Center. This is something we have been advocating for. So, I think you have a real partner in the state government, as we have a coincidence of objective. So, we are going to anxiously be waiting to hear from you on how you want us to engage.”
Dr. Peter Mbah further revealed that the present location of the Correctional Centre was built in 1915 and needs to be relocated to a more conducive environment.
“We already have a survey, which we have done, and we are more than happy to share the survey of the new location with you and we will take you to that location to see for yourselves,” Governor Mbah said.
Mbah further called for the automation of the justice dispensing system to reduce the congestion of the correctional centres.
“On our part, we are not going to relent in the intervention we have made in the entire justice reform system. We have now fully automated our court processes and the idea is to ensure that there is speedy dispensation of justice because we also realized that a lot of the inmates we have in the correctional centres are those who are awaiting trial. If we can ensure speedy dispensation of justice, then we would decongest these correctional centres significantly.”
“The automation extends beyond case filing to court proceedings, with verbatim reporters replacing the traditional longhand method. This is a significant step towards a more efficient justice administration system; this is a process we started a year ago. We are happy it is now coming to a conclusion stage,” Governor Mbah said.
In his remarks, the committee chairman, Chinedu Ogah, commended Governor Mbah on improved security of lives and property in the state, investment in security technology, no record of jailbreaks in the State, and laudable development strides which provide jobs, boost economic development, and diminish crimes.
The Committee, elated by the Governor’s proactive approach of providing the proposed new site also sought the government’s support in procuring vehicles for conveying inmates to and fro trial sessions.
The team visited the current Correctional facility and the proposed new site; Chinedu Ogah revealed the new site will have a Buffer zone and a training centre.
