Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has expressed deep concern over a fresh wave of Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in the state, describing the situation as a major threat to recent security gains in the North East.
Speaking at a high-level security meeting held in Maiduguri on Tuesday, the Governor said several communities are now under frequent attack due to the dislodgement of military formations in key local government areas.
“Renewed Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings in many communities almost daily without confrontation signaled that Borno State is losing ground,” Zulum warned.
He cited recent deadly incidents in Wajirko, Sabon Gari, Wulgo, and Izge where both civilians and security personnel were killed.
Zulum commended the federal government and the armed forces for their support over the years but said the time had come for Nigeria to deploy more advanced tactics, especially in border regions.
“It is disheartening to note the recent attacks and dislodgement of military formations in Wajirko, Sabon Gari in Damboa local government, Wulgo in Gamboru Ngala, Izge in Gwoza local government areas among other related killing of innocent civilians and security agencies calls for serious concern, and it is a setback in the fragile state of Borno and the North East region,” he said.
While emphasising his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, Zulum urged President Bola Tinubu’s government to prioritise modern military technology in tackling terrorism in the Sahelian axis of Borno, which shares borders with Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
“Since the Borno Government, under my leadership, commend the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for their unwavering support in the fight against Boko Haram, more efforts have to be put in place through equipping and deploying of technological warfare,” he said.
