NewsNigeriaMilitary Airstrike Kills Over 20 Bandits in Zamfara

…Vigilantes Caught in the Crossfire

An airstrike carried out by the Nigerian military in Zamfara State has killed more than 20 suspected bandits in what authorities described as a successful counter-terrorism operation.

However, the mission, which took place around Maraya and Wabi villages in Maru Local Government Area, also led to the deaths of some local vigilante members who were reportedly caught in the crossfire.

Military sources, who spoke to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, said the operation began on Saturday, 31 May, with a coordinated air raid under Operation Hadarin Daji. This was followed by a ground sweep the next day, led by troops of 1 Brigade under Operation Fansan Yanma.

“During the exploitation on June 1, it was confirmed that over 20 bandits were neutralised and several motorcycles destroyed,” a military source said.

The raid reportedly dealt a heavy blow to the armed groups operating in the area, with their equipment and means of movement badly hit. But it wasn’t without a tragic twist.

According to sources, a group of local vigilantes who had earlier been advised to withdraw from the target area failed to do so, resulting in unintended casualties.

“Unfortunately, five vigilante members were killed, while two others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital. A few others sustained minor injuries and did not require hospitalisation,” the source added.

It was gathered that the leader of the vigilante team has taken full responsibility for the incident, admitting that his men ignored clear warnings to move away from the area before the airstrike.

“He admitted that despite being informed of the imminent air operation, some of the vigilante youths insisted on pursuing the fleeing bandits and were still within the target area when the aircraft struck,” the military source revealed.

This operation is part of an ongoing push by the Nigerian Armed Forces to dislodge criminal gangs and restore peace in Zamfara and other North West states ahead of the farming season. Authorities say they have repeatedly warned community defence groups to stick strictly to operational rules to avoid friendly fire incidents.
